Do identical uniforms have to please and fit every employee?
The answer is simple: they don’t please everyone, and they don’t fit everyone either.
We recently surveyed the employees of one company to find out their opinions about uniforms. Responses came from around 200 employees, and the result was unambiguous - everyone has their own preferences and needs.
Some prefer pants only, others wear only dresses. Some employees choose garments that pull on over the head, while others definitely need versions with a zip. Colour preferences vary too: yellow does not suit some people, for example, and red makes others uncomfortable. This diversity confirms that one and the same solution does not suit everyone.
Is it possible to find a solution that works for different body shapes and style preferences?
The recommendation is to give employees options:
Different materials - a heavier fabric for the colder season and a lighter, more breathable material for warmer days. This adds comfort and lets employees feel comfortable whatever the season.
Extra pockets and practical details - different tasks call for different functionality, so employees could be offered versions with pockets, suitable for holding pens or keys, for example.
Adjustable details - an adjustable waist on pants, for example, or sleeves of adjustable length. Details like these make the clothing fit better across different body shapes.
Layering according to temperature - the option to combine a short-sleeved and a long-sleeved shirt, for example, or a light vest and a heavier jacket, to suit changing working conditions.
Unisex cuts - offer both unisex cuts and cuts adapted to gender, so that everyone finds a version that suits their body shape.
Optional placement of logos and brand elements - employees could have the option to choose a more discreet logo or a more eye-catching brand element that fits their role.
